Friends in My Head
by
John Sebelius
This exhibition investigates Sebelius’s connection and exploration of individuals he lived amongst in Slab City, CA and Sturgis, SD. The physicality of his paintings is created through a constant reworking process. Building up layers of ground and physically removing them allows him to connect with his subjects and materials on a physical and individual basis. This work presents the celebration of masculinity within various communities. Memories and dreams surrounding certain individuals and events continue to serve as inspiration for the work.
John Sebelius is an interdisciplinary artist that holds an M.F.A. in drawing and painting from the University of Kansas and a B.F.A. in illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design. Sebelius’s work has been featured in: Harper’s, Express, DETAILS, Review, CNN, Aspen Daily News, The Washington Post, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. John has shown work in Sydney, Australia, Providence, Kansas City, Chicago, and recently had a solo exhibition at the Gonzo Museum in Aspen, CO.
