Taking Flight
by
Rif Raf Giraffe
For this show, I wanted to incorporate the character elements of my graffiti with the slickness of oil painting that I can achieve in the studio, but without the controlled chaos that takes place in the collage and on the walls of the Art Alley mural. I wanted to bring attention to the individuality of the single characters themselves. My original characters - Rif Raf Giraffe, the Shooting Star, and the Squishies - juxtapose against the paintings of junk food. The oil paintings are painted in an almost cartoon realism. My representation of the junk food reflects the nature of that food itself. It looks tantalizing but lacks any real substance. Now reflecting upon the last year, my work to date and overall approach to life, I feel I am reaching my potential and finally Taking Flight." -Rif Raf Giraffe
