colorlust
new photographs by ashley proski
"Colorlust" documents minimal environments that highlight color as the main subject. Although her experimental attitude with her medium makes one question if this is how she saw it, Ashley attempts to deliver honesty and transparency through her photographs. Ashley uses film's inherent qualities by pushing and pulling it's capabilities to create a seemingly coherent image. The finished product is one that challenges the viewer's sense of reality in the image. The spaces she documents are quiet and melancholy, creating an unresolved void in reality. Viewers are encouraged to be intimate with the work and spend time starring and contemplating the truths and/or fallacies of perceived reality.
Proski was born in Maryland, raised in Arizona and is currently calling Kansas City home. On top of working with photographic mediums and processes, she also likes to experiment with fibers and construct books. Proski's work is predominately autobiographical, expanding from intimate relationships to travel experiences, always trying to capture the brutal honesty of her surroundings. There is a playful quality to her work, specifically in her exploration of traditional film. Proski highlights the 'mistakes' by allowing dust spots and color shifts to remain uncorrected. She continues to document the fragments of her day-to-day life with honesty.
